Children who are categorised as ‘overweight’ or ‘obese’ are at three times the risk of high blood pressure than children who are at healthy bodyweight.
The study of more than 1,100 children, conducted by the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, found that 14% of children categorised as overweight or obese had pre-hypertension or hypertension, compared with 5% of children with healthy bodyweight.
Lead researcher, Professor Wanzhu Tu, said: “Higher blood pressure in childhood sets the stage for high blood pressure in adulthood.”
The research was published in the AHA journal, Hypertension.
